Story of Kuldhara Village

KULDARA village in Rajasthan, near Jaisalmer, & it is famous for being abandoned by all its residents in just one night.
The story begins almost 200 years ago. The Kuldhara village people were frightened of only one person- the Diwan (Minister) of Jaisalmer. People say that he was demon-like & extremely huge. Since he was the minister, they had to pay him the taxes levied upon them.

One day when the Diwan came for his village visits to collect tax, his eye fell upon the beautiful daughter of the Mukhia (Chief) of the village.
The evil Diwan fell in love with the girl & announced, “I am going to marry this girl. If anybody stops me, then I will levy more taxes on the entire community. I will come tomorrow to take her away with me.”

The villagers were frightened, especially the Mukhia & his beautiful daughter. They did not want the girl to get married to a monster. They had to act quickly.
The Mukhia decided that the entire community will flee from Kuldhara and the nearby 84 villages. He sent his messengers to inform everyone & that night all the villagers left their land, cursing the evil Diwan & the land.

The next day, the Diwan came to take away the girl but found the village empty. How so many villagers vanished in one night is still a mystery.
The Paranormal Society of India found spooky voices, shadows that moved, & hand prints of children on cars when their team visited Kuldhara.

Nearsightedness (myopia)

Nearsightedness is an eye condition in which you can see nearby objects clearly, but faraway objects appear fuzzy or blurry. It’s also called myopia.
Certain health conditions, such as diabetes, raise your risk of nearsightedness. A family history of nearsightedness also increases your chance of developing it.
Nearsightedness can be treated using eyeglasses, contact lenses, corneal refractive therapy, or laser eye surgery.

Symptoms of Nearsightedness

The most obvious symptom of nearsightedness is blurry vision when you look at faraway objects. Children may have trouble seeing the blackboard at school. Adults may not be able to see street signs clearly while driving.

Other signs of nearsightedness include:

  • headaches
  • Eyes that hurt or feel tired
  • Squinting

  • The symptoms of nearsightedness usually go away after treatment with eyeglasses or contact lenses. Headaches & eye fatigue may linger for a week or two as you adjust to your new eyeglass or contact lens prescription.

Myopia is often diagnosed between the ages of 8 – 12. Your eyes are growing at this age, so the shape of your eyes can change. Adults usually remain nearsighted if they have the condition as a child. Adults can also become nearsighted due to certain health conditions, such as diabetes.
Visual stress is another risk factor for nearsightedness. This is eyestrain from doing detailed work, such as reading or using a computer.
Nearsightedness can also be an inherited condition. If one or both of your parents are nearsighted, you’re more likely to be as well.

Anatomy: How Does the Eye Work?

Nearsightedness is caused by a refractive error. A refractive error occurs when your eye doesn’t focus light correctly. If you’re nearsighted, your eye focuses light in front of your retina instead of onto it. This results in blurred vision.
The retina is the surface at the back of your eye that collects light. It changes the light into electrical impulses that your brain reads as images.
A myopic, or nearsighted, eye focuses incorrectly because its shape is slightly abnormal.  A nearsighted eyeball is usually a little too long, & sometimes its cornea is too rounded. The cornea is the clear covering on the front of your eye.

    Correction for Nearsightedness

Correction for nearsightedness may include :

  • corrective lenses
  • corneal refractive therapy
  • refractive surgery

  • Eyeglasses & contact lenses are examples of corrective lenses. These devices compensate for the curvature of your cornea or the elongation of your eye by shifting the focus of light as it enters your eye.

Contact lenses generally give you a wider field of corrected vision than glasses. They’re applied directly to the corneas of your eyes. Some patients can’t tolerate contact lenses because they irritate the surface of their eyes.

Refractive surgery is a permanent form of correction for nearsightedness. Also called laser eye surgery, the procedure reshapes your cornea to focus light onto your retina. Most people who have refractive eye surgery no longer need to wear contact lenses or eyeglasses.

    Protecting Your Vision

To help protect your eyes :

  • Get your vision checked regularly.
  • Wear corrective lenses prescribed by your eye doctor.
  • Wear sunglasses with ultraviolet (UV) radiation protection.
  • Use protective eyewear when doing risky activities, such as using toxic chemicals.
  • Take regular breaks from detailed work, such as looking at your computer screen.
  • Manage chronic health conditions, such as high blood pressure & diabetes.
  • Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, & omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Avoid Smoking

If you notice any changes in your vision, such as blurred vision or halos around lights, contact your eye doctor immediately. Taking good care of your eyes may help you see better for longer

    Corpse – Savasana

    • a) In Savasana it’s essential that the body be placed in a neutral position. Sit on the floor with your knees bent, feet on the floor, & lean back onto your forearms. Lift your pelvis slightly off the floor &, with your hands, push the back of the pelvis toward the tailbone, then return the pelvis to the floor. Inhale & slowly extend the right leg, then the left, pushing through the heels. Release both legs, softening the groins, & see that the legs are angled evenly relative to the mid-line of the torso, & that the feet turn out equally. Narrow the front pelvis & soften (but don’t flatten) the lower back.

    • b) With your hands lift the base of the skull away from the back of the neck & release the back of the neck down toward the tailbone. If you have any difficulty doing this, support the back of the head & neck on a folded blanket. Broaden the base of the skull too, &lift the crease of the neck diagonally into the center of the head. Make sure your ears are equidistant from your shoulders.

    • c) Reach your arms toward the ceiling, perpendicular to the floor. Rock slightly from side to side & broaden the back ribs & the shoulder blades away from the spine. Then release the arms to the floor, angled evenly relative to the mid-line of torso. Turn the arms outward & stretch them away from the space between the shoulder blades. Rest the backs of the hands on the floor as close as you comfortably can to the index finger knuckles. Make sure the shoulder blades are resting evenly on the floor. Imagine the lower tips of the shoulder blades are lifting diagonally into your back toward the top of the sternum. From here, spread the collarbones.

    • d) In addition to quieting the physical body in Savasana, it’s also necessary to pacify the sense organs. Soften the root of the tongue, the wings of the nose, the channels of the inner ears, & the skin of the forehead, especially around the bridge of the nose between the eyebrows. Let the eyes sink to the back of the head, then turn them downward to gaze at the heart. Release your brain to the back of the head.

    • e) Stay in this pose for 5 minutes for every 30 minutes of practice. To exit, first roll gently with an exhalation onto one side, preferably the right. Take 2 or 3 breaths. With another exhalation press your hands against the floor & lift your torso, dragging your head slowly after. The head should always come up last.

    King Dancer – Natarajasana

    King Dancer – Natarajasana

  • a) Stand in Tadasana (Mountain Pose). Inhale, shift your weight onto your right foot, & lift your left heel toward your left buttock as you bend the knee. Press the head of your right thigh bone back, deep into the hip joint, & pull the knee cap up to keep the standing leg straight & strong.

  • b) There are two variations you might try here with your arms & hands. In either case, try to keep your torso relatively upright. The first is to reach back with your left hand & grasp the outside of your left foot or ankle. To avoid compression in your lower back, actively lift your pubis toward your navel, & at the same time, press your tailbone toward the floor.

  • c) Begin to lift your left foot up, away from the floor, & back, away from your torso. Extend the left thigh behind you & parallel to the floor. Stretch your right arm forward, in front of your torso, parallel to the floor.

  • d) The second option with the hands is to sweep your right hand around behind your back & catch hold of the inner left foot. Then sweep the left hand back & grab the outside of the left foot. This variation will challenge your balance even more. Then raise the thigh as described in this second variation will increase the lift of your chest & the stretch of your shoulders.

  • e) Stay in the pose for 20 to 30 seconds. Then release the grasp on the foot, place the left foot back onto the floor, & repeat for the same length of time on the other side.

  • Full Pose

For the full pose, perform step 1 as described above. Then turn your left arm actively outward (so the palm faces away from the side of the torso), bend the elbow, & grip the outside of the left foot. (You can also grab the big toe with the first two fingers and the thumb). The fingers will cross the top of the foot, the thumb will press against the sole. Inhale, lift the left leg up, & bring the thigh parallel to the floor.

As you do this, rotate the left shoulder in such a way that the bent elbow swings around and up, so that it points toward the ceiling. It requires extreme flexibility to externally rotate & flex the shoulder joint in this way. Reach the right arm straight forward, in front of the torso & parallel to the floor. Hold for 20 to 30 seconds, release, & repeat on the second side for the same length of time.

Strugling With Dental Issue? This Herb Can Help You Fight Cavities

A new discovery has brought natural anticavity products closer to reality. The scientist from West China school of stomotology and Acdemic centre for Dentistry Amsterdam figureout the main active ingredient of gala inchinesis, a natural herb and firther improve its anticaries efficacy. Previous research suggested that even a simple habit like chewing gum could prevent tooth decay.
To maintain A HEALTHY MOUTH, THE ORAL ENVIOURNMENT MUST BE RELATIVELY NATURAL. When the enviounment in the mouth, becomes more acidic, dental cavities or other disorders may develop. Gala chinesis was revealed t inhibit the acid production of caries associated bacteria as well as teeth more resistent to acidic attack.

  • The research team tested hundreds of chinese herbs and identified that Galla :
  • chinesis has a strong potential to prevent dental cries due to its antibacterial capacity and tooth mineralisation benefit. Galla Chinesis also processes substantial antiviral, anticancer, hepatoprotective, antidiarrheal and antioxidant activities.
However the main active ingredient of Galla Chinesis is unknown, which restricts the application in dentistry. In dental caries, significant reduction in caries prevelance and incidence have been made by the introduction of fluoride.
It is not a total cure, however, and there is still need to seek products complementary to fluoride. With these new findings, the research team is working with the indurstry tp develop new oral care products. The finding is published in The open Dentistry Journal.

For Better Memory And Heading, Eat Pistachios And Peanuts

  • Daily consumption of nuts such as peanuts and pistachio can strengthen brain were frequencies associated with cognition, healing, learning, memory and other key brain funtions, a study has found.

Nuts have been known to play a crucial role in protecting the heart, fighting cancer, reducing inflammation and slowing the ageing process. In the study, researchers from the Loma Linda University in California explored the effects of regular consumption of six nut varieties- almonds, cashews, peanuts, pecans, pistachios and walnuts- on brainwave activity.
Electroencephalograms (EEG) were performed on the participants who ate the nuts, to measure the strength of brainwave signals. The results, published in the FASEB Journal, showed that pistachios produced the greatest gamma wave response, which is critical for enhancing cognitive processing, information retention, learning, perception and rapid eye movement during sleep.
On the other hand , peanuts, which are actully legumes, produced the highest delta response, which is associated with healthy immunity, natura healing and deep sleep. "This study provides significant benifical findings by demonstrating that nuts are as good for your brain as they are for the rest of your body," said lead investigator Lee Berk, Associate Dean at the versity.
EEG wave band activity was then recorded from nine regions of the scalp associated with cerebral cirtical function. All nuts were found high in beneficial antioxidant concerntrations of all.

Signs That You Are An Empath

The opposite of a narcissist is called an 'empath'. Could you be one of them? Empathy is the ability most humans have tounderstand the way someone else is feeling. unless you are a psychopath, narcissist, or sociopath, you will have the ability tofeel empathy for others on some level. how much empathy for other on some level. how much empathy we feel is on a scale, and some people feel it more intensely than others. people very high up on the scale, are known as empaths, and they take it to the next level."An empath is an emotion alsponge," says Judith Orloff, psychaitrist and the author of the Empath's Survival Guide. she adds that empaths absorb the stress and also the positive emotions into their own bodies from other people.

  • They Don't Have The Normal Filters
  • Being an empath doesn't just mean having a lot of compassion. In many ways, empaths don't have the normal filters other people do. Unfortunatly, this mean they can be taken advantage of by manipulative people.Narcissists see someone they can use,and the empaths see someone they think they can help and fix.

    Smartwatch Smart War (Megatronics Post)

    Smartwatches

A truly strange category. For more than 50 years now it’s been the stuff that fueled books movies, TV shows and nerd wet dreams. A few years ago it turned into reality. But the reality wasn’t pretty. Terrible interface, crippled features, always needing a smartphone connected for achieving even the simplest of things and absolutely horrendous battery life. Most companies came in strong, got a severe backlash of complaints, sold a mind numbingly small number of watches, whimpered, flipped over and gave up. Most Android Wear watches came from legacy luxury watch who wanted to get their foot in the door and frankly, they were all terrible.

The Apple Watch turned things around. Better features, great screen, improved battery life and some fitness tracking. The AW was able to stem the tide of crap being spewed out by all others. With the Apple Watch 3 they took it to a whole new level.
Yes, there’s a new kid in town and wants to be the Sheriff. The Fitbit Ionic is a serious piece of equipment that’s about to shake things up. A smartwatch has very different criteria to come out on top. Let’s break it down point by point and see which one ticks.

    Looks

Impossible to differentiate as both are really good looking. Each Come with different straps and colours and both look elegant and very sleek. The lonic is thinner while the AW has that rotating crown that makes it look very techie.

    Verdict Both are great Screen

The AW has a 312* 390 resolution screen for its 42 mn version while the Ionic has a 348* 250 screen. Both go to a 1000Nits in brightness, are easily readable in bright sunlight and are gorgeous.

    Verdict Both are stunning Sensors

Besides the typical sensors, both have an Altimeter to track elevation. Both also very capable of contactless payments. The Ionic has a far more accurate heart rate reading with additional sensors that make it as good as a chest based sensor. Also the Ionic has an additional SPO2 Sensor to read bloody oxygen levels as well as track sleep disorders. This hasn’t been activated yet, but will happen soon and will be a game changer in wrist sensors.

The Ionic wins this hands down Smartwatch feature

AW has the lead as it has an app store full of stuff already. Ionic’s acquisition of people will make sure that a large number of apps roll out soon. AW3 has a built in cellular connection, but as it’s an Esim it won’t work in India. But it has much better two way communication between the Watch and the phone.AW3 is the winner in smartwatch functionality

    Fitness tracking

Ionic tracks most fitness activities automatically without even the press of button. just start running and it’ll turn on its GPS, Start tracking your run statistics and give you a report once you stop. Both can track your swim laps. Ionic has one other advantage. you don’t need any additional download of apps for various activities. Its single interface makes it very easy to use.

Ionic is the easy winner here

    Battery life:
The Achilles heel of all smartwatches. Charging your smartwatch every night is one factor that is truly off-putting. Aw3 will give you one day off the charger while the Ionic clocks in at about six days. GPS use will give you slightly lower numbers for both.

Ionic wins this one by miles

Final verdictIf an extreme amount of smartwatch functionality is important and you are ios, then the AW3 is your better bet. If your quest is for the best fitness tracker in the world with outstanding battery life and good smartwatch features, the Fitbit Ionic is easy winner. It also work with both ios or Android and cost less. Finally, the world has two smartwatches that are truly exceptional. Dick Tracy, you can stop spinning in your grave!

An Unresponsive Printer Doesn'tMean The End

Here's expert advice on how to empathise with a taciturn lover and revive your band Do you sometimes feel that your partner has emotionally shut down? That the communication gap between you two is only growing by the day? This is usually the case when one partner can relate with oneself or the relationship anymore,as they are of the belief that the bond has run its course. But,does that really mean the end of love and compassion in a relationship? Here what relationship experts Shivani Misri Sadhoo, Pulkit Sharma and psychoanalyst Dr. Petra muller have to share with you, so you can communicrate better with your partner, and rekindle that bond that the two of you once cherished.
    STOP CHASING THEM
If your partner becomes unavailble, your primary reaction is to chase them to open up. This approach can be drive the partner away. Be patient; give them their space and time to feel that re realdy to share their inner thoughts and feelings.

    CALM DOWN

Giving space needs to be combined with not fretting about what might be wrong with the relationship worrying about it future. It better that you don give advice or offer help, as you don know what might offend your partner; they can be overly-sensitive.

CONNECT BY RELATING< AND NOT CRITICISING

Your aim is to rekindly the romance. Therefore, if you complain about the lack of communication, then it going to make things worse. Talk about the things you like, your common interests rather than the lack of dialogue in your relationship.

    SOMETIMES,IT'S NOT PERSONAL

There is a possibility that your partner is a private person, which means they do open up, but at their convenience. In a situation like this, don't force intimacy by demanding it; rather calmly invite it by displaying your understanding side.

RECONCILITION IS A TWO WAY STREET

One of the major reasons why one of the partners feels the need to stop communicating is because they feel that their partner focuses only on their point of view, rather than empathising with them. They feel that the other person is incapable of change. Show it to him orher that you are willing to change and understand them, if you want them to start talking to you.

How To Make Promise, Keep it

Do you find yourself tearing up your resolutions one week into the new year? Experts offer tips on how to keep them

    Anonna Dutt & Prakruti Maniar

It that time again, when you step into a new year, moti-vated, empowered, resolute that this one is going to be a roaring start to a better, healthier you. Chan-ces are, you felt like this before.Chan-ces are, you 've lost all motivation before Janu-ary ended.

    Why does this happen?

Health experts say it 's because most resolu-tions are too overwhelming to feel feasible once the euphoria of the first few weeks has faded. The trick, they add, is to break your life-changing target down into many smaller more doable ones. Want to get more exercise? Start with two-minute breathing exercise done while you re brushing your teeth. Want to eat healthier? Start by cleaning out your fridge and committing to one home-cooked meal a day."We recommend that people start with a maximum of three small changes,"says nutritionist Carlyne Remedios."Let small efforts up to big benefits. That way you be motivated to keep going, rather than feeling bogged down by the weight of the goals you have set yourself."

    TAKE TO YOUR FEET

Gym memberships usually jump in January. One of the most common new year resolutions is the one about getting more exercise. By the middle of the month, you re already inventing excuses and avoiding your trainer.Instead, be realistic and start the day with a doable worout in your own bathroom. As you brush your teeth every morning, lify one leg off the floor and place it on your inner thigh (as in vrikshasan). Count to 60 and then switch legs. This will ensure that you brush your teeth for a full two minutes-and get an asanathrown in too. "Vriskshasan trains the brain to bal-ance better, "says Delhi based yige instructor Zubin Atre."It also helps strengthen the lower leg muscles. While doing the pose, work towards focusing on your breathing rather than your balancing." Also, resolve to always chose the stairs instead of the elevator."For a person with an average weght of 65kg to 75kg, two flights of stairs help burn 10 calories. Coupled with a controlled diet, you should start felling fitter and health-ier in about two months. Your stamina will increase too,"says dietician Vriti Srivastav.
    'STOCK' UP
The easiest way to start snacking healthier.Scrub your fride and your work desk of all junk food such as biscuits and roasted makhana, sprouts bhel, chickpea chaat," says nutritionist Remedios. "A lot of your hunger is just thirst, so stay hydrated too." Another healthy-eating hack is to always have vegetable or chicken stock around at home. That way, if you re feeling nibblish, you can just heat the stock, add vegetables and treat yourself to a bowl of hearty soup.

    CHOP UP THE CHORES

Want to eat out less? Commit to one home-cooked meal a day."If you prepare your meals on the weekend and freeze them, they will lose some of their nutrient than outside food,"says nutritionist Luke Coutinho."Another way is to use the weekend to wash, peel, chop and boil or steam your meat or veggies, then cook it right before you eat."With help from Coutinho,Mumbai homemaker Simran Satnani,41,was able to stick her January 2017 resolution to eat healthier."I began a diet of home-cooked food in Februery, and I sought help because my resolve was already flagging. Because I was obese, I really wanted to do it. And I discovered that as your body gets used to home-cooked meals, it craves junk less and less,"she says.

    TRY MICRO-MEDITATION

If your busy schedule has you stressing about when to meditate, try meditaling wherever you are, three to five times a day. "You can meditate almost any where, while doing anything You need not lock yourself in a room,"says Atre." Allyou need is three seconds of calm and you can do what is called micro-meditation."Focus on the muscles in your body which ones are tensed, which are relaxed, which are the ones you are consciously engaging Close your eyes. Take three deep breaths and focus on the sounds and smells around you."What this does is relxes you, helps calm your nerves and ease stress," says Atre."You can even try it amid stressful situations such as a traffic jam, or just do it at your desk."

    TURN IN 10 MINUTES EARLY

Early to bed and early to rise is another common resolution. To make this more feasible, start with a 10 minute advance on your bedtime. Advance by another 10 minutes when you feel ready, and so on Umtil you are sleeping an hour or two earlier or hit your target. "If a working adult gets less than 6 houes of sleep every night, they are likely to be sleep-deprived and could suffer from impaired function,"says Dr Vikas Maurya, head of the department of Fortis hospital, Shalimar Bagh in new Delhi. "In such cases, even an extra hour of sleep could make all the difference."

Why Should you store your data in the cloud?

It’s pretty simple to understand where a file goes when you save it on your PC. It lives on your hard drive, possibly housed in a set of folders you’ve created and organized yourself. That file is only stored on your computer, unless you decide to email it to yourself or save it on an external hard drive or USB.

    Now what about the cloud?

At its most basic level, “the cloud” is just fancy-talk for a network of connected servers (a server is simply a computer that provides data or services to other computers). When you save files to the cloud, they can be accessed from a computer connected to that cloud’s network. Now take that idea and multiply it to understand how the cloud works for you. The cloud is not just a few servers, but a network of many servers typically stored in a spaceship-sized warehouse—or several hundred spaceship-sized warehouses. These warehouses are guarded and managed by companies such as Google (Google Docs), Microsoft (One Drive) Apple (iCloud), or Dropbox.

So it’s not just some nebulous concept. It’s physical, tangible, real.

When you save files to the cloud, you can access them on any computer, provided it’s connected to the Internet and you’re signed into your cloud services platform. Take Google Drive. If you use Gmail, you can access Drive anywhere you can access your email. Sign in for one service and find your entire library of documents and photos on another.

Why are people concerned with cloud security?

It’s physically out of your hands. You aren’t saving to a hard drive at your house. You are sending your data to another company, which could be saving your data thousands of miles away, so keeping that information safe is now dependent on them. “Whether data is being sent automatically (think apps that sync to the cloud) or driven by users uploading photos to social media, the end result is that it’s all there somewhere being logged and stored,” says Jérôme Segura, Senior Security Researcher at Malwarebytes.
And that somewhere is a place that’s not in your direct control.

    Risks of cloud storage

Cloud security is tight, but it’s not infallible. Cybercriminals can get into those files, whether by guessing security questions or bypassing passwords. That’s what happened in The Great iCloud Hack of 2014, where nude pictures of celebrities were accessed and published online.
But the bigger risk with cloud storage is privacy. Even if data isn’t stolen or published, it can still be viewed. Governments can legally request information stored in the cloud, and it’s up to the cloud services provider to deny access. Tens of thousands of requests for user data are sent to Google, Microsoft, and other businesses each year by government agencies. A large percentage of the time, these companies hand over at least some kind of data, even if it’s not the content in full.

Some people argue that they have nothing to hide, that they’re not doing anything wrong, and couldn’t care less if their private information is accessed, especially if it helps in the effort to track down terrorists,” says Segura. “While there is no doubt that ready access to data is an invaluable asset for intelligence agencies, it is really important to remember that each individual has a fundamental right to privacy.

    Benefits of cloud storage

On the flip side, the data you save to the cloud is far more secure than it is on your own hard drive. Cloud servers are housed in warehouses offsite and away from most employees, and they are heavily guarded. In addition, the data in those servers is encrypted, which makes hacking it a laborious, if not formidable, task for criminals. Whereas a malware infection on your home computer could expose all of your personal data to cybercrooks, and even leave your files vulnerable to ransomware threats. In fact, we recommend backing up your files to a cloud service as a hedge against ransomware.

Another benefit to storing data on the cloud is cost effectiveness and ease-of-access. You can store tons of data, often for free, using the cloud. Measure that against the number of external hard drives and USBs you’d have to purchase, and the difficulty accessing data once you’ve stored to multiple other devices, and you can see why cloud storage has become a popular option for businesses and consumers alike.

    Final verdict

Yes, your data is relatively safe in the cloud—likely much more so than on your own hard drive. In addition, files are easy to access and maintain. However, cloud services ultimately put your data in the hands of other people. If you’re not particularly concerned about privacy, then no big whoop. But if you have sensitive data you’d like keep from prying eyes…probably best to store in a hard drive that remains disconnected from your home computer.

If you’re ready to store data on the cloud, we suggest you use a cloud service with multi-factor authentication and encryption. In addition, follow these best practices to help keep your data on the cloud secure:
    • Use hardcore passwords:Long and randomized passwords should be used for data stored on the cloud. Don’t use the same password twice.
    • Back up files in different cloud accounts:Don’t put all your important data in one place.
    • Practice smart browsing:If you’re accessing the cloud on a public computer, remember to log out and never save password info.

5 Tech Travel Tips You Can Use Work your Personal Computer

Travelling soon? For most people, this also means making sure your tech is packed and ready for the adventure. Smartphones, ebook readers, tablets, laptops and smart watches are now so light and portable that you’d never think of leaving them behind, plus they can add a ton of value your experience. Here are a few tips to consider before you hit the road. Backup to the cloud While you’re jet setting around, relaxing on a beach or hiking your way to freedom, your tech is always going to be exposed to a level of risk. This might range from accidentally leaving your laptop at a cafe to having it stolen from your bag, but either way the problem is the same – your data is now gone. If you’ve backed up your devices to the cloud (eg Evernote, Microsoft OneNote or Google Drive) you’ll be able to access your files easily and securely from anywhere.

Hot tip: Scan or save important documents like itineraries and passports to the cloud.

    Pack the right cables

Begging random strangers for a loan of their cable isn’t much fun, so remember to bring the exact cables and chargers you’ll need. Most smartphones and tablets use universal plugs like Micro USB, USB C or Apple Lightning, so you can get away with only packing one cable. Many locations now offer powered USB ports but be sure to also pack the right charger as well, it’s a convenience you’ll appreciate. If you’re travelling overseas and the socket is different, remember to pack a plug converter, and depending on your destination, you might even find the voltage is different. It’s a good idea to check whether you also need a voltage converter before you try and charge.

    Download offline data

It’s no secret that global roaming can give nasty bill shocks. The easy access data you normally use over Wi-Fi or get included in your cell plan has us all accustomed to being connected. While travelling, you might find yourself in a location where data costs a fortune or it’s not available at all. Download any files you might need, including important documents like itineraries and bookings, so that you can access them even without a connection.

    Update and scan

Just like you’d make sure you’ve got the right vaccinations and travel gear, make sure your tech is ready to travel too. Set aside a few minutes to run updates for your operating systems and apps, as well as your anti-virus. Go one step further and run a manual anti-virus scan too. The last thing you want to deal with one your trip is a cyber attack! While you’re doing your pro-active thing, turn on password protection for all devices so that only you can unlock them.

Hot tip: Use a complex password that is hard for thieves to guess.

    Mark your territory

Almost exactly the way it sounds, let everyone know this tech belongs to you. Write your cell number on portable devices in case you get separated so whoever finds it can give you a quick call and save the day. Don’t want to use permanent marker on your shiny tech? Grab some sticky labels you can peel off when you get home.

You can also get little Bluetooth tracking tags to stick to your gear, so that if you ever lose something you can chase it down. Similarly, you might like to consider enabling the ‘find my feature on Apple devices. Having this feature switched on also means you can disable your device remotely, an excellent security option if it’s been stolen.
